Without the addition of this header board the door track would only have hit something called a header inside the wall which is basically two 2x4s stacked on top of each other in a couple of places over the doorway.

There should be one inch of space between the barn door and the wall frame.
Which is great if you re only ever going to have your door closed.
A backer board is only required if you don t have this much space available see steps 3 5 below.
In this project the mounting board was painted black and the edges rounded slightly for a more finished appearance.
It will help create a gap between the door and frame.
Use a color that matches the door or the trim in your home.
Use the drywall anchors spacers and lag bolts to secure the mounting board.
The hardware kit does not come with the supplies you will need to install a header board so you will have to get the piece of wood and interior screws separately.
